Fast Facts
Willamette University was founded in 1842 as a forward-thinking, co-educational institution — its first graduate was a woman. The 81-acre campus is located in the center of Salem, across the street from the Oregon State Capitol building. This proximity has given generations of Willamette students the opportunity to participate in the important social and political issues of their day through internships and other direct action. The university motto, “Not Unto Ourselves Alone Are We Born,” provides the underpinnings for a campus culture that is committed to service and making a difference in the world. Among the campus organizations that reflect this commitment are the Council for Diversity and Social Justice and the Council for Sustainability.

The mission of the College of Liberal Arts is to maintain a setting, which encourages and sustains students and faculty in the practices of liberal education. The school understands liberal education as preparation for students to lead rich and rewarding lives, rejoicing in the diversity of the world, and contributing to its welfare. The College of Liberal Arts endeavors to search for truth and for those principles by which we can understand ourselves, one another, and the natural world upon which we depend.

Willamette University is a private liberal arts institution founded in 1842 in Salem, Oregon (one hour south of Portland and about one hour east of the Pacific Ocean).
