Worcester Polytechnic Institute has developed a reputation for innovation. WPI graduates have invented such life-altering technologies as stainless steel, the airbag safety system and the catalytic converter. The WPI Plan is hands-on and project-based and takes a humanistic view of engineering. WPI emphasizes teamwork instead of competition, fostering an environment of collaboration among students. The only test-optional techie school, WPI is half the size of Rensselaer and a third the size of MIT.
