Fast Facts
Founded in 1749, Washington and Lee University is the nation’s ninth-oldest institution of higher learning. The university was the first in the U.S. to offer courses in business and journalism, and continues as the only institution ranked in the nation’s top 20 liberal arts schools to have accredited schools of both business and journalism. As a national institution with teacher-scholars committed to teaching in small classes, Washington and Lee’s 40 undergraduate majors are augmented by numerous study abroad opportunities and interdisciplinary courses and programs. The student-run Honor System defines a community of trust in which exams are unproctored and facilities are open 24/7. The university’s strengths include the Speaking Tradition and the widely regarded quadrennial Mock Presidential Convention. Washington and Lee’s students routinely win prestigious fellowships, including the Watson, Fulbright, Luce and Goldwater.
